Adelsheim 2009 Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, Oregon
I find too often that new world Chardonnay
can be so heavily oaked (and overly influenced by malolactic fermentation) that the wine actually distracts (even detracts) from the meal. Adelsheim so judiciously uses oak in the creation of this elegant Chardonnay (which is to say hardly at all and then only in the form of neutral barrels) that the wine accentuates and elevates your dinner, instead of smashing it into gustatory oblivion.

~Bonny Doon Vineyards
“Le Cigare Volant” 2006 California
A Biodynamic California version of the much-beloved Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines from France. It was named “Le Cigare Volant” to poke fun at the whacky (and maybe forward thinking?) 1954 French law prohibiting the landing of spaceships (“flying cigars”) in any vineyard within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Those who penned the law were afraid that a space craft’s landing might negatively affect the quality of the wines they were producing and ruin the reputation of the region. (When you think about it, really, they were probably right, I mean spaceships could really wreak some havoc on a vineyard, am I right?)

*Hawkes 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon,
Alexander Valley
Super small production winery. The Hawkes family had been growing grapes in Alexander Valley, known for its delicious Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, for 30 years before they decided to see what it would be like to make their own wine with their own grapes. Taste this and you’ll want to ask, “What took them so long?!” This Cab has a gorgeously textured, fabulously layered palate.
